Progressive youth vote organization endorses Democratic candidates in Michigan
Lansing, MI — Today, NextGen PAC endorsed incumbent candidate Gretchen Whitmer for Michigan Governor. Ahead of the election this November, NextGen PAC will leverage its grassroots organizing infrastructure in Michigan by mobilizing thousands of young voters to defeat her Republican challenger, who has yet to be determined. Additional endorsements in the Great Lakes state include incumbents Jocelyn Benson for Secretary of State and Dana Nessel for Attorney General.
NextGen PAC’s endorsement of Whitmer is due to her commitment to protecting abortion access and care, LGBTQIA+ rights, and voting rights. Throughout Governor Whitmer’s time in office she has been a fierce advocate for Michiganders’ civil liberties, and young voters know that she is a leader who will truly represent and reflect their vision for the future. NextGen PAC has also endorsed Jocelyn Benson for Secretary of State and Dana Nessel for Attorney General due to similar stances on key issues. Re-electing these lawmakers will protect Michigan from GOP rollback and will create a more just and equitable state for decades to come.
“NextGen PAC is proud to endorse candidates Gretchen Whitmer, Jocelyn Benson, and Dana Nessel,” NextGen PAC President and Executive Director Cristina Tzintzún Ramirez said. “Michigan is a critical state in this year’s midterms and we are ready to stand up against MAGA-endorsed Republicans who wish to dissolve the rights of LGBTQIA+ people, criminalize abortion, and block gun saftey leglsiation. In 2020, young Michiganders came together and propelled progressives to victory statewide. Now, we must mobilize and use our voices again to protect the progress we have made and build a stronger future.”
To keep Michigan blue, NextGen PAC will invest in organizers in communities and on campuses across the state to ensure young people are ready to turn out for Democrats up and down the ballot. In 2020, NextGen contributed to the highest youth voter turnout in history, reaching more than 10.5 million people across nearly a dozen states and motivating nearly 4.7 million to cast ballots in the November election. Across the country in 2020, NextGen reached one in every nine voters under 35 who cast a ballot.
